Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero is the first child of his parents Alfonso Rodríguez and Delia López-Cepero. He was born on April 15, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His parents had two other children, two girls, Jean and Tatiana.

Fonsi has always focused on music. In his childhood, he tried to tailor his singing so that it could sound like the popular Puerto Rican singing group Menudo. During this period of his life, he was also an active member of the San Juan Children’s Choir.

For his high school education, Luis moved to Florida where he enrolled at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando. Here he met some friends, including singer Joey Fatone, and together they formed a popular local singing group known as the Big Guys.

After high school, he was accepted with a full scholarship to Florida State University to study for a degree in singing. Luis was also involved in singing groups. He performed with the University Choir and also with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Despite the scholarship, he later dropped out of school to begin his music career. Not long after he dropped out of school, Universal Music Latin offered him his first music contract.

Career

The debut album of Luis Fonsi was a hit. In 1998 he released his first project Comenzaré, which translated means “I will start”. It was a great success in Latin America, Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and other Spanish-speaking markets. It also entered various charts for Latin American music, including the charts of Billboard’s top Latin albums.

Its follow-up album in 2000 was even more successful. By that time he had already achieved fame in the Spanish music market and could even be heard on a song by Christina Aguilera.

In 2002 Luis Fonsi released his first English album Fight The Feeling. In the music video for the title “Secrets”, he introduced his friend Joey Fatone from high school. His fifth album Abrazar la Vida reached the top of the Billboard Latin charts. During this time, he worked with former Spice Girl, Emma Bunton, on their 2004 album.

Fonsi’s next two albums, Paso a Paso and Nada Es Para Siempre, made it to the top of the charts, with the latter receiving a Latin Grammy nomination. Three years after his 2014 album, the veteran Latin singer released the most successful work of his musical career to date. The release of Despacito in January 2017 together with Daddy Yankee broke the mold of Latin music and shot for the stars. By the first week of April 2018, the music video for the song had collected 5 billion hits on YouTube, making it the most-watched video in the world. It also made it to the top of virtually all Latin Billboard charts. Luis Fonsi then did an English remix of the single with Justin Bieber, who climbed to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for 16 consecutive weeks.

In May 2018 Despactio TV released a response to the hit single, Despacito II, which featured Sans Undertale, Charlie Puth, and rapper Soulja Boy. After the success of the single, the Puerto Rican singer collaborated with other artists such as Demi Lovato, Aitana, and Stefflon Don.

Luis Fonsi had built his acting career side by side with his music since 1992. He made his acting debut in a brief appearance as a friend of the main character in the love movie Como Agua Para Chocolate. Twelve years later he appeared in Corazones al límite in the role of Roy in the Mexican telenovela. He also appeared in the Nickelodeon series Taina in 2001 and was part of a two-week tour with the cast of Broadways Forever Tango in August 2013.
