ASAP Rocky – Wiki
ASAP Rocky was born to an African-American mother and a Barbadian father. He was born as Rakim Mayers in Harlem, Manhattan, on October 3, 1988, and named after the rapper Rakim, who was a member of the duo rap group “Eric B. & Rakim”. The rapper had an older sister, Erika, and also an older brother.
It was his older brother who was his earliest rap inspiration and the main reason why Rakim started rapping at the young age of 9. In his early teens, he experienced two family tragedies. First, his father went to prison for drug dealing in 2000, and his older brother was shot dead in Harlem a year later.
These tragedies prompted Rakim to take rapping more seriously. He moved around for a while with his mother and sister and lived in homeless shelters. Rakim had also worked as a crack peddler in the Bronx for a time when he was just 15 years old. Eventually, he moved to midtown Manhattan, away from his family.
Besides his brother, Rocky was influenced by heavyweights like the Three 6 Mafia, the Wu-Tang Clan, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, The Diplomats, Run DMC, and others.
