During all this time, the company founded by his grandfather was managed by his uncle, Richard A. Smith. He also served in an advisory capacity in the purchasing office of General Cinema National Film.
Two years later he founded a production company, “Chestnut Hill Productions”. The company produced several films and television shows between 1988 and 2010. After a reported attempt in which Lurie tried to buy the Los Angeles Rams, he shifted his focus back to Boston. This time his uncle gave him the green light to buy the Philadelphia Eagles. He himself and his mother, Nancy Lurie, had to take out a loan of 190 million dollars from the Bank of Boston to buy them.
Lurie brought part of his personal shares into Harcourt General and GC Companies Inc. as equity. He and his mother also had to deposit their share of the family trust as collateral for the rest of the money. On 6 May 1994, Lurie successfully acquired the football franchise.
