Lurie was born on 8 September 1951. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clark University, followed by a Masters in Psychology from Boston University and a Ph.D. in Social Policy from Brandeis University. For his dissertation, he wrote a compelling piece on the portrayal of women in Hollywood films. After his doctorate, he accepted a position as an Adjunct Professor of Social Policy at Boston University, the school where he received his master’s degree.

Career

During all this time, the company founded by his grandfather was managed by his uncle, Richard A. Smith. The company had been transformed into Harcourt General Inc. to accommodate the growing acquisition of companies outside of its original industry. Lurie left his job as a professor to join the family business in 1983. He served as a senior liaison between the Hollywood production community and General Cinema Corporation. He also served in an advisory capacity in the purchasing office of General Cinema National Film.

Two years later he founded a production company, “Chestnut Hill Productions”. The company produced several films and television shows between 1988 and 2010. Some of them include Dance of the Sweet Hearts from 1988, Blind Side from 1993, and Inside Job from 2010. Early the following year, the film Inside Job won the Oscar for “Best Documentary”. Lurie is a die-hard fan of every sports team in Boston. He reportedly fell asleep listening to the Boston Red Sox on his radio. Since the New England Patriots franchise was founded in 1960, the Lurie’s have also attended games every season.

Lurie’s love of Boston sports led him to try to buy the New England Patriots in 1993. His attempt failed because his Uncle Richard canceled the purchase for financial reasons when the bid reached $150 million.

After a reported attempt in which Lurie tried to buy the Los Angeles Rams, he shifted his focus back to Boston. This time his uncle gave him the green light to buy the Philadelphia Eagles. He himself and his mother, Nancy Lurie, had to take out a loan of 190 million dollars from the Bank of Boston to buy them.

Lurie brought part of his personal shares into Harcourt General and GC Companies Inc. as equity. He and his mother also had to deposit their share of the family trust as collateral for the rest of the money. On 6 May 1994, Lurie successfully acquired the football franchise.

The risk that Jeffrey Lurie took seems to have paid off in full. According to a Forbes report, the club was valued at 2.4 billion dollars in 2015. Another success was the fifty-second edition of the Super Bowl on February 4, 2018, when Jeffrey Lurie’s Philadelphia Eagles, widely regarded as the underdogs, beat the Patriots for the title. They won the game by 41 to 33 points. This was Lurie’s first title as owner of the Eagles. Their last NFL title was in 1960 when Lurie was a young boy.
