Gladwell was born on September 3, 1963, in Fareham, Hampshire, England. His full birth name is Malcolm Timothy Gladwell. He was born the son of two successful personalities. His mother, Joyce Gladwell, is a Jamaican psychotherapist, and his father a mathematics professor, Graham Gladwell from Kent, England.

The family lived in rural Canada, and when he was six years old, the family moved from Southampton to Elmira, Ontario, Canada. When Gladwell was still in high school, he was active as an athlete in middle-distance running and even won the 1500-meter title for 14-year-old boys in the 1978 Ontario High School Championships in Kingston, Ontario. He won the championship with a time of 4:05:20.

Gladwell attended the University of Toronto, Trinity College, Toronto, and graduated with a degree in history in 1984. He also completed an internship at the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C. in 1982.

He found it difficult to be accepted by any advertising agency he applied to after he decided to pursue a career in advertising. He later took a job as a journalist at American Spectator and moved to Indiana.

From 1987 to 1996, Gladwell worked at the Washington Post, where he covered science and business for the publication. After completing his tenure with capital-based publishing, he joined The New Yorker, where he stated that he wanted to “search current academic research for insights, theories, directions, or inspiration.

The articles “The Tipping Point” and “The Coolhunt” that Gladwell wrote for The New Yorker in 1996 brought him certain popularity. In his most recent escapades, he created the Next Big Idea Club together with Susan Cain, Daniel Pink, and Adam Grant. He still writes for The New Yorker.

Apart from his time as a journalist, he is also a recognized and published author with at least five books. His first book, The Tipping Point, was published in 2000 and was inspired by the sudden drop in crime in New York City. He had written an article of the same name in 1996. His work even had some influence on some of the NYPD’s policies.

After The Tipping Point, the next book Gladwell wrote was Blink. It was published in 2005. It was an international bestseller with over 2 million copies sold. His third book was Outliers, published in 2008, and What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures, published on October 20, 2009. It was a book with a compilation of his favorite articles since he started working for The New Yorker.

Most of the stories in it had different perspectives on the themes. His book David and Goliath, which was published in October 2013, focuses on the struggle between underdogs and favorites.
