Dr. Phil Bio

Phillip Calvin McGraw, widely known as Dr. Phil, was born in Vinita, Oklahoma in the United States on September 1, 1950. His parents are Joseph J. “Joe” McGraw Jr. and Anne Geraldine Stevens. He is the third of four children, the others are girls. His sisters’ names are Deana, Donna, and Brenda McGraw. His father supplied oil drilling equipment, so Dr. Phil and his three sisters grew up in the oil fields of North Texas. He completed his high school education at Shawnee Mission North High School, Overland Park, Kansas, from where he went on a scholarship to the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.

In college, he became interested in football and played as a middle-line backer. His time on the college soccer team will be remembered by the record-breaking 100-6 beating of the University of Houston soccer team. He later transferred to Midwestern State University, Texas to complete his college education. He graduated in 1975 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, but he had not yet finished. The following year, he received his master’s degree in experimental psychology, and in 1979 he received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas.

Career In Psychology, Television

After earning a doctorate in clinical psychology, Dr. Phil began to practice as anyone would expect, but he made no progress, so he decided to branch out a little. He began helping trial lawyers build their cases based on the subject matter. He would determine the best line of defense or argument for the prosecution through the behavior patterns of the defendants, suspects, or even plaintiffs. In 1989, Courtroom Sciences Incorporated (CSI) was founded, of which he was a co-founder together with Gary Dobbs, who was an attorney. The firm handled cases for some of the world’s leading companies, helping them recover debts and winning multi-million dollar lawsuits. Needless to say, the firm was enormously profitable for all parties involved at the time, and in 2006 Dr. Phil withdrew his license to practice law.

He dedicated his time to CSI, and this decision was a turning point, because through his work at CSI he met Oprah Winfrey and helped her win a case against cattle ranchers in the beef trial in Amarillo, Texas, which began in 1995 and ended in 1998. After winning her case, she decided to host Dr. Phil on one of her shows as a thank you.

This was the beginning of Dr. Phil McGraw’s journey as a television personality, as he became a regular face on the Oprah Winfrey Show every Tuesday. In September 2002, he launched his own daily television talk show, “Dr. Phil,” which had the highest ratings since Oprah began in 1986.

Dr. Phil was married twice. His first marriage was to Debbie Higgins McCall. Their wedding took place in 1970, and Dr. Phil, who was not a doctor at the time, was only 20 years old. But although the love was young, the marriage never lasted long, as they went to court three years later to divorce. The union did not produce any offspring and Debbie claimed that Dr. Phil was bossy and asked her to do certain things that made her uncomfortable. His second marriage was to Robin Jo Jameson in 1976. The couple celebrated their 40th anniversary, with Dr. Phil giving his wife a surprise in one of his shows. The couple has two sons together. Jay McGraw, born September 12, 1979, and the second son, Jordan McGraw, born in 1986.
