Karl-Anthony Towns plays professional basketball with the Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association as its center. The Dominican-American actually began his NBA career with the team after finishing first in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Towns were named to the Dominican Republic National Basketball Team at the age of sixteen. Before his NBA career, he played college basketball at the University of Kentucky. As a rookie, Towns won the NBA “Rookie of the Year” award. Learn more about the player below.

Towns were born on November 15, 1995, in Edison, New Jersey, the son of an African-American father and a mother of Dominican descent. He grew up in Piscataway, NJ, before moving from Our Lady of Fatima School to Theodore Schor Middle School in 2009 and attending Lake Nelson Seventh-Day Adventist School. He had to repeat 7th grade at Theodore Schor to receive an additional year of development.

Although he attended these different schools, Karl-Anthony began playing basketball at St. Joseph High School. In his first season, he led the school team to the state championship, which earned him a top spot on the ESPN list of 25 national high school players. He also led the team to other state titles in 2013 and 2014.

In 2011, at the age of sixteen, he was selected for the Dominican Republic national basketball team. His selection was based on the fact that his mother is from the Dominican Republic. The team was coached by the University of Kentucky, John Calipari, and an NBA head coach and was later to finish 3rd in the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship and 4th in the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament the following year (2012).

In late 2012, Karl-Anthony Towns announced his intention to re-qualify for the senior national team and play for the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team under coach Calipari. As a senior player, Towns averaged 13.4 rebounds, 6.2 blocks, and 20.9 points per game. He won the 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year award.

After high school, Karl-Anthony went to the University of Kentucky to study kinesiology and play basketball. He hoped to become a doctor after his basketball career, but he left Kentucky after a year for the NBA. Since he was still determined to get a degree, he enrolled in online courses.

During his one-year stay in Kentucky, Karl-Anthony Towns averaged 6.7 rebounds and 10.3 points in 21.1 minutes per game. He also won All-American titles from the second team of NABC and the Associated Press and an All-American title from Sporting News’ third team. In 2015, Towns, along with many of his Kentucky teammates, declared for the NBA Draft 2015.

NBA Career

In the NBA Draft 2015, Towns was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the first overall selection. In July of the same year, he signed his contract with the team on the rookie scale and had his first appearance in October in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he scored 12 rebounds and 14 points as a starter. The game ended with a 112-111 win.

The following month (November), Towns became the seventh Timberwolves player to receive the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award, making him the seventh Timberwolves player to receive the NBA Rookie of the Month award. In January 2016 he scored 12 rebounds and 32 points in a game against Utah Jazz. Although the game ended in defeat, Towns was the youngest player to set such a record in 2008 behind Kevin Durant.

In February, he won the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award for the fourth year in a row, making him the second player in the team’s history to receive this award four times in a row. At the end of his rookie season, he won the Western Conference Rookie of the Month six times, the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and the NBA All-Rookie First Team award, among others.

The following season, he doubled for the 100th time in his career, becoming the second-youngest player in NBA history and setting a mark that was first set by Dwight Howard. At the end of the 2016/2017 season, Karl-Anthony Towns made history as the only player in the NBA to score 2,061 points, 1,007 rebounds, and 100 3-points (101) in a single season.

In March 2018 Towns recorded his best 60th NBA doubles double in the NBA in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers. He would later end the season with sixty-eight double-doubles – the highest in the NBA to date.

Karl-Anthony Towns Family

Karl-Anthony is the only son of Karl Towns Sr. and Jacqueline Cruz. He has two sisters, Malaika Singleton Towns and Lachelle Towns. His father also played basketball at Monmouth University and later served as a coach at Piscataway Technical High School. During his time in the 5th grade, Towns Jr. coached the university junior team.
