Joe Gomez was born Joseph Dave Gomez on May 23, 1997, in Catford, a borough in southeast London. From an early age, Gomez dreamed of making it big as a footballer. He reportedly had pictures of big Premier League stars such as Rio Ferdinand on his wall, hoping one day to realize his dream.
Gomez began his journey to the top of the Sunday League, where he was scouted by nearby south-east London club Charlton Athletic. According to Gomez, Charlton invited him to a six-week trial, after which he was rejected by the club. Despite his broken heart, the boy returned to the Sunday League and continued to show the kind of performance that had earned him a trial in the first place. A few months later, Charlton sent him another invitation, this time including him in his academy program.
As a 10-year-old, Gomez seemed to have his head and shoulders above his peers. Within three years of joining the Academy, he made his debut on the club’s under-18 team, proving his growth and ability. These skills did not go unnoticed as major clubs began to enlist his services, but Gomez remained with The Addicks and signed his first professional contract with the team in 2014 when he came of age. A few months earlier, he had already made his debut in the first team, when he played for Charlton in his first senior team, a total of 24 appearances for Charlton.
After completing his development somewhat, the next step for Joe Gomez was to join a larger club that matched his personal ambitions. In the transfer window of summer 2015, the versatile defender came to Liverpool for a fee of around £3.5 million. He made his first-team debut on 9 August 2015 in a game against Stoke City, where he scored the only goal of the match. In that year, everything went according to plan for the player until he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the international match for the English U21 team.
Joe Gomez spent an entire year on the sidelines before returning to training to continue his career where he left off. In January 2017, he competed in an FA Cup match against Plymouth Argyle for the first time since the terrible injury in 2015.
