Katarina Witt was born on 3 December 1965 in Staaken. At that time it was in East Germany, and there she was raised by her parents. While her father (Manfred Witt) ran a farm, her mother (Käthe Witt) worked in the health sector. She grew up at the side of her brother Axel Witt.
For her education, Katarina attended school in Chemnitz, which was then called Karl-Marx-Stadt. Since she showed athletic abilities as a small child, she was sent to a school for athletic children, the Kinder- und Jugendsportschule.
Her childhood is characterized by the sports for which she will later become famous. She trained as much as possible and soon she began to participate in competitions, which she did well thanks to her trainer Jutta Müller.
Her first international tournament did not end as great as she would have liked after finishing 14th at the European Championships in 1979. Nevertheless, three years later she was back on the international stage, but this time with a better performance. The more events Katarina attended, the better she became.
Her most significant year was 1984 when she won the Olympic gold medal at the event in Yugoslavia. In the same year, she won her first World Figure Skating Championships. In the following years, she was to win another Olympic and four other World Figure Skating Championships in 1988. Witt also won 6 European Championships, among others, before she finally retired in 1994.
After her retirement, Katarina Witt founded an ice-skating production company and in 2005 she founded a charity organization that cares for children with disabilities. She has also published 2 books to date; a memoir and a non-fiction book, “So much life”, which has been translated as “So much life”.
