Who is Cecily Strong?

Cecily Legler Strong was born on February 8, 1984, in Springfield, Illinois, but she grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. Born to Penelope and William ‘Bill’ Strong. Cecily, whose parents are now divorced, grew up as a big fan of Saturday Night Live as a child. She spent a lot of time watching old Saturday Night Live commercials and re-enacting some of the sketches with a friend.

Cecily attended Oak Park and River Forest High School before transferring to the Chicago Academy for the Arts for her final year. She graduated in 2002 and then studied acting at the California Institute of the Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater in 2006. Upon graduation, she returned to Chicago where she studied at the Second City Conservatory. She also studied at iO Chicago, an improvisational theater and training center.

Career

After graduating from CalArts, Cecily Strong performed regularly at The Second City and the iO Chicago. Before joining the SNL, she performed on a cruise ship with her colleagues from The Second City for four months. She has also performed at various live events including the Chicago Sketch Fest, Chicago Just for Laughs, New York Sketchfest, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and once with the all-female improvisation group Virgin Daiquiri.

On September 15, 2012, Cecily made her debut as a sought-after entertainer on Saturday Night Live. Together with Seth Meyers, she hosted the recurring Weekend Update segment of the live show. She also co-hosted Colin Jost before being replaced at her behest to focus on sketches as part of the SNL’s regular cast.

In Saturday Night Live, Strong played various characters in various sketches, including characters such as an extremely ditzy, unintelligent and unnamed pseudo-activist known as ‘The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party’, Kyra from ‘The Girlfriends Talk Show’, Cathy Anne – the drug-addicted neighbor of Michael Che, who has a strong opinion on current events, Heather – the one-dimensional female character from a male comedy, Gemma – a British woman with various friends, among others.

Apart from playing characters written in a sketch, Cecily is also known for her celebrity impressions on Saturday Night Live. She has already imitated many celebrities.

As part of her work as a live comedian, she has also appeared in several other comedy shows outside of Saturday Night Live. In 2015, she was the lead actress at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. In 2016, she appeared in a commercial for Old Navy with two of her co-cast members in the SNL. She also appeared in Angie Tribeca by TBS and Scream Queens by FOX.

Cecily Strong has also appeared in several movies and television shows, most notably her appearance in The Boss and the remake of the cult movie Ghostbusters in 2016.
