Howie Mandel is a Canadian-born comedian, actor, TV presenter, and all-around entertainer. He proved himself an excellent performer through stand-up comedy before making a name for himself on television. Mandel became widely known as the host of the NBC game show Deal or No Deal. He was also the host of the Canadian-English version of the show (2007) as well as the daytime version.

Prior to his highly successful role as host of the game show, Mandel was known for his role as Dr. Wayne Fiscus in NBC’s 1980s drama St. Elsewhere (1982-1988). He is also the creator and executive producer of the critically acclaimed animated series Bobby’s World (1990-1998). In January 2010, Howie Mandel was announced as a juror for the NBC reality TV series “America’s Got Talent.

Many people know that Howie’s birthplace was in the Willowdale area of Toronto, Ontario and that his date of birth was November 29, 1955.

He was raised by Jewish parents and also attended a Hebrew school. His father was a real estate agent and also a manufacturer of home furnishings.

Mandel received his high school education at the William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute but was expelled before he could complete his studies. His misdemeanor was to impersonate his high school principal and convince a construction company to do some construction work on his school. This was definitely an unfortunate prank.

Howie Mandel then worked as a carpet salesman. During a vacation trip to Los Angeles, he stumbled upon the chance of a showbiz career. He was discovered by a producer when he worked as a freestyler in the comedy store in L.A. He was quickly hired to perform on the comedy game show Make Me Laugh during the 1979 show.

Mandel proved to be an excellent performer and eventually graduated from stand-up to TV show. One of Howie Mandel’s early film roles was the lead role in the Canadian film Gas.

His acting breakthrough came in 1982 when he got the role of ER intern Dr. Wayne in the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere, which also starred Denzel Washington. The show ended on May 25, 1988, after a successful six-year season on NBC. Mandel also lent his voice to the role of Gizmo in the 1984 Gremlins hit and resumed his role in the sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). He also starred in the comedies Walk Like a Man (1987) and Little Monsters (1989), among others.

The talented actor and comedian then created the Emmy-nominated animated series Bobby’s World (1990-1998), in which he served as both executive producer and narrator. In 1998, he launched his own syndicated talk show, The Howie Mandel Show, which ran for only one season.

In 2003, Mandel considered retiring early from show business when he was offered the opportunity to host the NBC game show Deal or No Deal. He turned it down several times before finally accepting the career-changing role. The role rejuvenated his career and ruined all plans for Mandel’s retirement. In 2007 Mandel hosted a 5 episode run for Deal or No Deal Canada. The talented comedian also had a guest appearance in an episode of the popular children’s series Sesame Street (season 38).

In January 2009 he launched the short-lived NBC reality series, Howie, Do It. The talented entertainer and TV presenter replaced David Hasselhoff as one of the judges on America’s Got Talent in January 2010.

Given his achievements as an entertainer, it was no surprise when Howie was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in September 2008; that was sometime in September 2008. About a year later, he was also honored with a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame in his hometown of Toronto.

Howie’s a writer too. He published his autobiography – Here’s the Deal: Don’t Touch Me – in 2009, a book about his struggles with OCD and ADHD.

Howie Mandel has been married to Terry Soil Mandel for several decades. The marriage was entered into on March 16, 1980. Together they have 3 children: 2 daughters, Jackie and Riley, and a son named Alex.

His first daughter Jackelyn Shultz was born in 1984. She is a teacher and married Alex Shultz on July 22, 2013. Mandell’s second daughter Riley Mandell was born in 1992. In 2006 she appeared as a model in an episode of the game show Deal or No Deal.

Mandell’s son Alex Mandel was born in 1989. Like his father, Alex Mandel made a career in show business. He is a talented comedian, actor, director, and YouTube blogger. Alex Mandel played a role in his father’s syndicated reality series Howie Do It. He also appeared in the prank show Scare Tactics (2003) and Destination Fear (2012).
