The football player was born Clinton Drew Dempsey on March 9, 1983, in Nacogdoches, Texas. Clint grew up in an athletic family with a sister, Jennifer Dempsey, who played tennis and began playing soccer as a young child. He grew up in the backyard of his grandparents’ house in a trailer with his four siblings.
From his early days, he played soccer with his older brother Ryan Dempsey, and by the time he was 10 years old, his talent was already evident, so his family decided to try him out in a youth club, which accepted him immediately. Every week he had to make a 6-hour trip with his father to train. To get the money for gasoline, his father, a carpenter, had to sell his boat.
When he was 12 years old, he retired from soccer because the family had to sponsor his sister, who was an exceptional player in tennis. After finishing his youth career with Dallas Texans, he played soccer for the Furman Paladins’ men as a student at Furman University. He played from 2001 to 2003 and then signed with the MLS New England Revolution from 2004 to 2006, where he scored 25 goals in 71 appearances.
He moved to England to play in the Premier League for Fulham from 2007 to 2012 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and remaining there until 2013 when he signed with Seattle Sounders FC, where he played until his retirement in 2018.
