Swae Lee is an American rapper best known as half of the platinum-selling hip hop group Rae Sremmurd. As a solo artist, Swae Lee has managed one album and at the same time has participated in the records of other artists, most notably French Montana’s five-time platinum record “Unforgettable”.
Biography (Age, Real Name)
Swea Lee was born on June 5, 1995, as Khalif Malikibnsham Brown to a single mother named Bernadette Walker in Inglewood, California. Details about his father are unknown, apart from the fact that he left his family soon after Lee’s birth.
Because of his mother’s work in the United States Army, the family moved around the States very often and lived in Mississippi, Maryland, and Texas. During his stay in Texas at the Fort Hood military post, Swea Lee and his older brother/future co-worker in the group Rae Sremmurd, Slim Jxmmi, started writing music and taught themselves how to record songs with online software.
During her time in middle school, her mother left the army and had to move again. This time she went back to Mississippi, where she had moved in with a new companion. The family settled in Tupelo, Mississippi, and lived in the Ida Street Housing Projects, a neighborhood known for its poverty and high crime rate.
After graduating from high school, Swae Lee focused all his attention on his craft and considered music as a way out of poverty. With his brother and a friend named Jemiah Middlebrooks, he formed a hip-hop rap group called Dem Outta State Boyz.
Swae Lee revealed that he and his brother slept on the streets for a number of nights before they had their big breakthrough. The reason was that their mother had kicked them out because they were skipping school and came home very late.
The boys then released their first play, “Party Animal”, which earned them local celebrity status. It also opened the doors for them to perform as support acts in local clubs and shows while gaining a huge fan base online.
After failing to attract the attention of the big music managers, the brothers decided to move to Atlanta, a decision that proved to be the best for their music career.
In Atlanta, the brothers met the famous hip-hop producer Mike Will Made-It, who was impressed with their work and offered them a record deal. They signed with Ear Drummers Entertainment under the nickname Rea Sremmurd, which means Ear Drummers spelled backward.
The duo began producing tons of songs and eventually released the hit single “No Flex Zone” in 2014. The song went straight to the top of the charts and gave room for even greater success for their second single “No Type”, which debuted at number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100 list. Her first studio album was finally released in 2015 to critical and commercial acclaim. In total, the duo has released three studio albums: SremmLife, SremmLife 2, and SR3MM, which have sold millions of copies in the meantime.
As a solo artist, Swae Lee has appeared on a number of records by other artists and has also produced a number of them. His first solo excursion into music was in 2015 on Mike Will’s track “Drinks on Us”, then on Wiz Khalifa’s “Burn Slow”. His biggest performance was on “Unforgettable” by French Montana. In May 2018 he released his first solo debut album entitled “Swaecation vol. 1”.
