Bio & Age – Who is Winifer Fernandez?

Winifer Maria Pèrez was born on 6 January 1995 in the Province of Santiago in the Dominican Republic. In her hometown of Cienfuegos, Santiago de los Caballeros, she began her journey in volleyball at the age of ten with her coach Miguel Duran.

Winifer is proof that with hard work and dedication in life you can go very far.

Her Volleyball Career

At fifteen, Winifer grew stronger and more experienced with every volleyball game she played, and earned several awards, including Best Digger, Best Receiver, and Best Libero in the 2010 NORCECA Youth Championship, despite her team finishing fourth.

Winifer Fernandez won the bronze medal and the prize for best libero in the Pan American Girls’ Youth Cup 2011, and in the same year, she won the prizes for best digger, best receiver, and best libero, putting the volleyball star in the spotlight.

It is safe to say that without Winifer Fernandez, the Santiago team would not have won the gold medal in the 2012 Northern Region Cup. She was the main protagonist of the game and led the Spikers by 15 points. Fernández shared the Libero position with Ana Binet for the first time at the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix and made her debut with her senior team. This caused mixed feelings among her fans.

At the 2012 Junior Championship of the North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA), Winifer Fernández led her under-20 national team to the gold medal, qualifying for the 2013 World Junior Championships, and at the end of the game took home the well-deserved prize for the most valuable player, as well as other awards such as Best Digger, Best Receiver and Best Libero. Again? Yes, again!

Winifer later led her team to win the gold medal in 2012 under the 23 Panamerican Cup. In early 2013 she won the MVP at the Baja California International Cup in Mexico for the second time.

Ms. Fernandez was voted Volleyball Player of the Year 2012 by the Santo Domingo Guild of Sports Writers alongside her Libero colleague Brenda Castillo. She also won the silver medal at the 2013 Pan American Cup, which was held in Cuba with her junior team.

As if that wasn’t enough, the athlete won the 7th Cabarete Beach Volleyball Tournament, together with Brayelin Martinez and Larysmer Martinez. In June, she and her junior national team finished eighth in the Under-20 World Championship at the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB).

Winifer Fernandez was named Volleyball Player of the Year by the Guild of Sports Journalists of the Province of Santiago in early 2014. She was again selected for her national team in 2016, winning the gold medal in Group 2 of the World Grand Prix. Winifer again won the gold medal in the Pan American Cup, which was played in her home country. She and her team scored 5-0 in a pool game and beat Cuba 3-0 in the semi-finals.

She later took part in the 2017 FIVB U23 World Championship against Italy’s Savino Del Bene Scandicci. Fernández played with the “Cienfuegos” in the XLIII inter-communal volleyball tournament and won the championship and the prize for best Libero. She also won the gold medal for the under 23s in the 2017 Bolivarian Games.
