Tony Robbins Bio

Tony Robbins was born Anthony J. Mahavoric on February 29, 1960, in North Hollywood, California. However, he grew up mostly in Azusa and Glendora, both cities in the state of California. His parents (whose names are unknown) divorced when he was very young. In fact, he was just 7 years old when it happened, and he describes this experience as a fervent one. His mother, on the other hand, remarried and married heavily, which caused a lot of instability in Tony’s life. Tony had to deal with the emotional trauma of having a new father at the exact moment when he got used to the old one. One of those new fathers who ended up being an old father was a baseball player named Jim Robbins.

Jim Robbins adopted Tony when he was 12 years old and explained why Tony gave up his last name Maharovic for Robbins. In her search for love, Tony’s mother hardly had time to take care of him and his 3 younger siblings. As the oldest child, Tony had to take on this huge responsibility. He took odd jobs to earn money to meet some of the basic needs of his younger siblings.

Surprisingly, Tony Robbins’ educational background is not really as solid or flattering as some might think. He attended Glendora High School and was promoted to President of the Student Body in his last year of school. However, Tony could no longer bear the frustration of living with his mother, so he left home at the age of 17. This contributed greatly to his lack of college education. To make ends meet, he eventually took a job as a janitor.

From Nothing To Something

How Tony Robbins had to go through all this and still ended up a multimillionaire seems almost like a miracle. After working as a janitor, he became a seminar organizer for Jim Rohn, who is both an author and a motivational speaker. He was still 17 years old when he started to organize seminars for Jim Rohn. At the age of 23, Tony mastered and taught NLP, Ericksonian hypnosis, and firewalking.

By 1988 Tony had already organized several seminars where he used his skills in Ericksonian hypnosis and firewalking. In the same year 1988, he published his first commercial, entitled Personal Power, produced by Guthy Renker. Over the next three years, Tony’s commercial was to be seen by over 100 million Americans. In 1997 Tony Robbins created the Leadership Academy Seminar, which was attended by many prominent Americans and seen by over 4 million people.

Tony Robbins’ Career

Tony is co-founder of the Robbins-Madanes Center for Intervention. He founded this organization together with Cloé Madanes with the goal of training other life coaches, helping families, and counseling people involved with addiction. Throughout his career as a life coach, Tony Robbins has worked with prominent people from various walks of life. These include former US President Bill Clinton, tennis superstar Serena Williams, Hollywood star Hugh Jackman and American rap icon Pitbull.

As an author he has written the following books: Unlimited Power (1986), Awaken the Giant Within You (1991), Giant Steps (1994), Money: Master the Game (2014), and Unwavering: Your Financial Freedom Playbook (2017), which he co-wrote with Peter Mallouk. Tony made it onto Accenture’s “Top 50 Business Intellectuals” list and was named one of the “Top 200 Business Gurus” by the Harvard Business Press.

Wife, Divorce, Children

Robbins was married twice. In 1984 Tony met one of the participants of his seminar and fell in love with her. Her name was Rebecca Jenkins. Rebecca was married twice before and had three children, but Tony didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he married her and adopted all of her children (one of whom is Jolie Jenkins). However, after 14 years of marriage, Tony and Jenkins were divorced.

About 3 years after his divorce from Rebecca Jenkins, Tony married Bonnie Robbins, née Humphrey, in October 2001. This marriage was not well received by some people. The Vancouver Sun wrote an article about it and called Tony a “wife who steals hypocrites”. Tony sued her for libel and was rewarded $20,000. Although they have no children together, Tony and Bonnie are still happily married to this day.

Tony also fathered a child out of wedlock. In 1984 his ex-girlfriend Liz Acosta gave birth to a son named Jairek Robbins. Jairek Robbins is a successful motivational speaker and performance trainer. He is actually Tony’s only biological child.
