During his early days in pre-school, during his time at Burbank High School, Tim was considered an average student who had no interest in the regular curriculum. Instead, he had a passion for painting, drawing, and watching films. He started making movies at a very young age. At the age of 13, he made a film called The Island of Doctor Agnor, in which he used rough stop-motion animation. The short film is his oldest surviving film.

He enrolled at the California Institute of Arts and took a course in character animation. During his time at the institute, Tim shot the films King and Octopus and Stalk of the Celery Monster.

During his time at Disney, he made a short film called Vincent, which earned him a positive response and also an award. The film was shown at the Chicago Film Festival. Next came his first live-action production Hänsel and Gretel. Frankenweenie was his next live-action short film, which he shot in 1984. It was his last tour of duty at Disney. The great adventure of Pee-wee followed, which marked the first collaboration between him and songwriter Danny Elfman. The movie became a huge success and gave him the chance to shoot more successful movies like Batman, which became one of the biggest box office hits of all time. In the 1990s, he made the film Edward Scissorhands, a film that was rated by most people as his best shoot among the others.

Batman brought him so much attention that he designed the sequel Batman Returns, which was broadcast in 1992 and received the same positive ratings as Batman Returns. The next film from the Batman franchise, Batman Forever, was produced in 1994 under the direction of Joel Schumacher. It became a blockbuster hit that brought in more than 336 million dollars at the box office.

Other films he made in the 1990s were James and the Giant Peach, Sleepy Hollow, Superman lives, Mars attacks, Cabin Boy and Ed Wood. In the 2000s he started his next projects, Planets of the Apes and Big Fish. The latter was based on the novel Großer Fisch. The film was a success and received four Golden Globe nominations and one Oscar nomination.
