Tamara Taylor was born on 27 September 1970 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She also grew up as an only child in Canada. The actress has revealed that she did not complete her high school education. According to her, she dropped out of high school to pursue a career as a model and “see the world”. Before this critical decision, her mother enrolled her in modeling classes to give her more confidence.

Taylor eventually moved to Los Angeles to give acting a chance after visiting her bosom friend Cree Summer on the set of the 1990s NBC sitcom A Different World.
