Harris was raised by his mother after she broke up with his father when he was a child. She later married another television producer, Paul Junger Witt. During his childhood, he had always had an interest in religious discourse, even if religion was not one of the things discussed by his parents.

He first attended the institution as a major in English, but he went to India before returning to earn a degree in philosophy. He then received a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles.
