Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on December 22, 1962, in Ipswich Suffolk, England. His parents were Mark Fiennes and Jennifer Lash. As a teenager, his family moved to Ireland, where they settled for several years. There he studied at St. Kieran’s College for one year and then moved to the Newtown School. His family eventually moved back to England where he completed his education at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Fiennes originally enrolled to study painting at Chelsea College of Art, but after a while, he quit to pursue his true passion, acting. From 1983 to 1985 he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Ralph Fiennes began his acting career at both the Open Air Theatre and the National Theatre before he finally became famous with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Ralph Fiennes’ father Mark Fiennes (1933-2004) was a photographer and illustrator and his mother Jennifer Lash (1938-1993) was a novelist and painter. He has 5 siblings, and many of them are also active in show business. His siblings include Joseph Fiennes, an actor, Martha Fiennes, a film director, Sophie Fiennes, a filmmaker, Magnus Fiennes, a musician, and Jacob Fiennes, an environmentalist. He also has a foster brother, Michael Emery, who is an archaeologist.
