Michael Cohen was just another lawyer on one of Donald Trump’s many properties, and chances are there are many of them, but when the Long Island-born lawyer took it upon himself to get into a scuffle between one of Trump’s real estate management companies and residents, Trump became aware of it.
Trump was a fan of stubborn and loyal lieutenants and was very much in Cohen’s style, and this was the beginning of a lifelong alliance. Cohen held many key positions within the Trump organization and was the person to contact when Trump needed a tough man to solve problems. Michael Cohen was born on 25 August 1966 as the son of a Jewish father – Maurice Cohen, who was a Holocaust survivor. His mother Sandra was a practicing nurse and he grew up in the town of Lawrence on Long Island. Micheal attended the Lawrence Woodmere Academy and then moved to the private United Methodist-affiliated American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned a bachelor’s degree. He received his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 1991.
Career
Cohen’s classmates at law school claim that he was not necessarily the brightest of the students and never imagined a brilliant career at the top of law school. In 1992, he began working as a personal injury lawyer for Melvyn Estrin in Manhattan. In addition to his law practice, he ventured into managing taxis in New York.
Cohen has business interests in real estate, and in 2003 he was CEO of MLA Cruises, Inc. and Atlantic Casino. He had an uneventful foray into politics in 2003 when he held a seat on New York City Council but was beaten by Democratic candidate Eva S. Moskowitz.

Before joining the Trump Organization in 2006, Michael Cohen worked briefly as an attorney for Phillips Nizer LLP. At the Trump Organization, Cohen quickly rose through the ranks to become Special Advisor and Executive Vice President with a seat on the Board of Directors of the Eric Trump Foundation.
In 2008, when Trump acquired a controlling interest in the Martial Arts and Entertainment Company, Affliction Entertainment, Cohen was named COO. He also served as Co-President of an affiliated company that managed Trump’s casino operations in New Jersey.
When his boss entered the presidential race, Cohen jumped in the ring with him and was an integral part of the campaign, appearing on national talk shows, running campaigns, and shedding more light on Trump’s political views.
After Trump won the elections, Cohen quit his job with the Trump Organization but retained his role as his personal advisor. He was also appointed deputy national financial chair of the Republican National Committee, which is responsible for party fundraising.
Investigations and Controversies
In January 2017, Michael Cohen was mentioned by name in the Trump Russia dossier, a document by Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer, which claims that there was a ploy to obstruct elections with the tacit consent of elements within the Trump team. The report claims that Cohen was in Prague in 2016 to expedite a cover-up that would be considered illegal.
In 2018, Cohen found himself embroiled in even more controversy when a Wall Street Journal published that he paid porn star, Stormy Daniels, the sum of $130,000 in 2016 as “hush money” for her affair with Trump. Cohen claims he paid the payment out of his pocket without Trump’s knowledge.
In April 2018, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York opened a federal criminal investigation against Michael Cohen, accusing her of violations of the Campaign Financing Act and bank and wire transfer fraud. The Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen’s office at his law firm, his apartment, and his hotel room at the Loews Regency Hotel in New York City – a move that angered the President, who feels that protecting attorney-client privilege is under attack.

In 1994 Michael Cohen married Laura Shusterman, who was born in Ukraine. The couple is blessed with two children – a daughter, Samantha Cohen, and a son, Jake Cohen. Jake is a student at the University of Miami and would graduate in 2022. His sister Samantha attends the University of Pennsylvania. Cohen’s parents-in-law, Ania and Shusterman Fima, own property in the Trump Towers in New York.
