Josh Dun was born on June 18, 1988, as Joshua William Dun. The drummer came from a religious family with Christian leanings, but even as a small child Josh was very rebellious. He was always in conflict with his parents – Laura Lee and William Earl. They were so confused about what to do with him that they considered sending him to military school. He did not fare better in school because he was always sent to detention. Josh revealed that he had never taken drugs or alcohol, but his character was nothing to talk about in high school.
He didn’t come from a musical family, but he always had a love of music from a very young age. As a young boy, he had a preference for the punk rock genre and always went to a nearby music store to buy albums of this genre. He preferred secular rock, but his parents had a different opinion. His first opportunity to play drums for a band came in March 2010 for a rock group called House of Heroes (HOH). He replaced the band’s drummer (Colin Rigsby), who went to spend time with his family – temporarily playing in most of their songs on the Suburban album. He left the group in October when Colin returned – after joining the band on tour.
After HOH, Josh decided to move to Nashville, but he was recruited by now-former Twenty One Pilots drummer Salih Chris. Salih and co-founder, Nick Thomas, left the group before mid-2011, and after their departure, Twenty One Pilots became a two-piece band with frontman Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun as sole drummer. Stressed Out is indisputably their most successful song to date. It earned them the best pop duo/group performance at the Grammys. It was released in April 2015 and after one year had sold about 2.6 million copies.
