The marriage of James Mcavoy’s parents was not long, their happiness broke up and ended in divorce in 1985 when he was barely 7 years old.

He was born Roman Catholic but no longer practices it. After his parents separated, he ended up with his maternal grandparents, Mary and James Johnstone, because his mother was ill. His grandfather was a butcher in Glasglow.

Early Life

James has two siblings; a sister, whose name was only given as Joy, and a younger half-brother, Donald, who most likely stems from his father’s later relationship. Due to his parent’s divorce and the living conditions thereafter, James had no relationship or contact with his father James Snr.

He attended St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Jordan Hill Glasglow and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. As a child and because of the family’s devotion to the Christian religion, James once had the wish to become a priest, but it never worked out. While at school he worked in a bakery to help the situation at home with his elderly grandparents.
