Hollywood superstar and amazing Scottish actor James Mcavoy was born on April 21, 1979, in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Elizabeth Mcavoy, who worked as a psychiatric nurse, and James Mcavoy, a construction worker. The marriage of James Mcavoy’s parents was not long, their happiness broke up and ended in divorce in 1985 when he was barely 7 years old.
He was born Roman Catholic but no longer practices it. After his parents separated, he ended up with his maternal grandparents, Mary and James Johnstone, because his mother was ill. His grandfather was a butcher in Glasglow.
James has two siblings; a sister, whose name was only given as Joy, and a younger half-brother, Donald, who most likely stems from his father’s later relationship. Due to his parents’ divorce and the living conditions thereafter, James had no relationship or contact with his father James Snr.
He attended St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Jordan Hill Glasglow and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. As a child and because of the family’s devotion to the Christian religion, James once had the wish to become a priest, but it never worked out. While at school he worked in a bakery to help the situation at home with his elderly grandparents.
James’ debut in acting was an appearance as a teenager in the film The Near Room. He admitted that he wasn’t so keen on becoming an actor at the time but he soon decided to study acting after developing feelings for his co-star Alana Brady on the set and this decision certainly paid off. After graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in 2000, he began making guest appearances on television shows and films. His first major film role was as a gay character in the play Out in the Open, which he performed to perfection, prompting directors to recognize his talent and offer him other roles.
From the beginning, McAvoy was picky about the kind of roles he played, and as such, he turned down many roles in the early 2000s. During these years he accepted roles in films and shows such as Band of Brothers (2001), White Teeth (2002), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), State of Play (2003), and others. By this time, audiences around the world had begun to recognize McAvoy’s expertise, and of course, they wanted more from him.
In 2005, Jame McAvoy’s popularity with the public grew more than ever before, and of course, this had a lot to do with the time he spent working with Walt Disney on The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The film’s box office success brought in over £8.7 million in one weekend in 498 cinemas. This in turn sparked a surge in demand for McAvoy, as directors from all corners of the country came to McAvoy with roles and delicious deals. Some of his most famous works to date are Wanted (2008), The Last Station (2009), Welcome to the Punch (2011), Filth (2012), and his role as Professor Charles Xavier in the famous Xmen series from 2010 to 2019.
In addition to acting, James McAvoy has also made voice recordings for animated films such as Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps.
