Paolo was born on 11 July 1990 in New York. He grew up in the care of his parents; Julia Mendelson, singing teacher and classical pianist, and Collin Paolo, writer, and screenwriter. The actor of Jewish descent became active in the acting scene in 2002, but his first major film appearance was Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-nominated Mystic River in 2003. His role as Young Sean in the crime thriller drama was highly praised. A year later he starred in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live as Travis O’Connell, a recruiting figure.
In 2006 he decided to develop his acting skills by gaining more experience. With this in mind, in the same year, he entered professional acting school at the same time as Sarah Hyland, Paul Iacono, and Taylor Momsen. He took classes at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. In addition, Paolo attended the Appel Farm Arts and Music Center Summer Arts Camp in Elmer, New Jersey for several summers. In 2008 he continued his education and attended New York University for one semester.
His career reached a new level when he got a role in the teen hit series Gossip Girl as the little brother of Blake Lively. He was cast as Eric van der Woodsen, the brother of celebrity Serena Van der Woodsen, for the series when it was launched in 2007. In the series, the New York-born actor starred in many episodes and had many leading actors, including Eric’s suicide attempt and his gay coming-out.
Although he did not participate in the filming of season four with the characters Jenny and Vanessa, the three actors returned to the field for the last time during the series finale (season six), New York, I Love You XOXO.

After leaving the teen series, he dropped his teenage look and as expected, his career took a new turn. With his new look, he has landed more big-screen deals that match the beard he now wears.
One of these deals is the production of the vampire apocalypse movie Stake Land, directed by Jim Mickle, which took him out of his comfort zone in 2010. He also starred in the ABC series Revenge as Declan Porter, the following year when he shifted his focus completely from Gossip Girl to new projects.
