Gerard was born on April 9, 1977, in Summit, New Jersey, as Gerard Arthur Way and grew up as a Catholic with his younger brother Michael James Way in Belleville, New Jersey, with his parents, Donald Way and Donna Lee. Gerard Way is American by nationality, but also of Italian and Scottish descent, as his father is half-Scottish and his mother Italian.
Gerard is a singer, songwriter, musician, and comic writer. His enthusiasm for singing began when he was a little boy. He received many encouragements from his maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush. Through her daily encouragement, he fell more and more in love with singing, writing, and drawing. According to Gerard, she was his only source of inspiration when he was growing up. She taught him to sing, write, draw, and perform, which eventually led to his passion for these arts growing. At the age of eight, he got his first guitar, which his grandmother had given him as a present.
Gerard attended Belleville High School in Essex and graduated in 1995. While still in high school, he wrote his first comic book On Raven’s Wings in 2013. In the fourth grade of primary school, he also played the role of Peter Pan. After graduating from high school, he decided to pursue his dream in art and applied to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.
In 2001 he completed his internship at Cartoon Network. In the same year, he founded the rock band My Chemical Romance together with his brother Michael Way as the bassist of the band.

Gerard Way is married to the Scottish-born artist and musician Lindsay Ann Ballato. Lindsay was born on 21 May 1976 in Dunoon, United Kingdom. The British lady bears the stage name Lyn-z. She is best known as the bass player of the American rock band Mindless Self Indulgence. Ann moved to the United States, more precisely to New York, at the age of 17 to study art and illustration at the Pratt Institute.
The couple Way and Ann started their relationship in June 2007 after Way broke up with his ex-girlfriend Eliza Cuts. They then married on September 3, 2007.
On May 27, the same year as the couple’s second wedding anniversary, they welcomed their first child into the world, Bandit Lee Way.
