Emily Irene VanCamp was born on May 12, 1986, in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. Her parents are Cindy and Robert VanCamp, and she grew up with 3 siblings, an older sister Katie and younger sisters Alison and Molly. She began studying dance at the age of three with the goal of becoming a professional dancer. She was accepted at the École supérieure de ballet du Québec, the training program of the ballet company Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal.
VanCamp’s interest in acting was awakened in 1998 when she visited her sister Katie on the set of a film. She then began taking acting lessons and also hired a talent agent. After appearing in a series of television commercials, she made her professional acting debut in season 7 of the fantasy series Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2000).
