O’Brien was born in New York City on August 26, 1991, as the son of his father Patrick O’Brien, a cameraman of Irish descent, and his mother Lisa Rhodes of Italian, English, and Spanish descent, who were well known during their time as an actress. He was raised by his parents in Springfield Township, New Jersey, before they moved to Hermosa Beach, California. In March 2016 Dylan O’Brien was involved in an accident on the set of the film Maze Runner: The Healing of Death. He was seriously injured and suffered a concussion, facial fractures, and lacerations that were severe but not life-threatening. A few months after recovering from his injuries, he began other film projects such as the disaster thriller drama Deepwater Horizon and then postponed shooting dates for the final part of the Maze Runner series.
