Charles Quinton Murphy was born on July 12, 1959, in the New York borough of Brooklyn as the son of Charles Edward Murphy and Lillian Murphy. His mother was a telephone operator, while his father was an amateur comedian and traffic cop.
Charlie spent 10 months in prison as a teenager for assaulting a driver at gunpoint with a friend. The day he was released from prison, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a boiler technician for six years. Before he left the Navy, he witnessed a nuclear mushroom cloud over Beirut. He later found out that the mushroom cloud he saw was actually a result of the 1983 bombing of the Beirut barracks.
