Al Pacino Biography

Alfredo James Pacino was born on April 25, 1940, in East Harlem, New York City, to Italian-American parents, Salvatore and Rose Pacino. Unfortunately, his parents divorced when he was two years old. His mother took him to the Bronx to live with his grandparents, who were immigrants from Corleone, Sicily. A place that would later determine the life of Al Pacino.

Al Pacino, who had a passion for acting, was accepted after an audition at the High School of Performing Arts. He tried to finance his acting training by taking jobs as a messenger, busboy, or janitor, but eventually had to quit. However, he continued his acting career by performing in basement theaters in the New York theater underground. The actor then moved to the Herbert Berghof Studio (HB Studio), where he met acting teacher Charlie Laughton.

In 1962 his mother died at the age of 43, and the following year his grandfather Gerardi also died. Al Pacino said that this was the lowest point in his life, as he lost the two most influential people in his life.

Al Pacino’s Career

After four years at HB Studio, Al Pacino has successfully auditioned for Actors Studio, a well-known and respected membership organization of professional actors, theater directors, and playwrights in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen district. At the Actors Studio, he studied “Method Acting” under the renowned acting coach Lee Strasberg, whom he credits, along with Charlie Laughton, for helping him launch his career. In 2010 he became Co-President of the Actors Studio.

Al Pacino’s foray into a paid acting career began in 1967 on the stage of the Charles Playhouse in Boston, where he appeared in Clifford Odets Awake and Sing. He also appeared in various plays and in 1969 made his Broadway debut with Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? The talented actor received excellent reviews and even won the Tony Award on April 20, 1969, winning a second Tony for his performance in The Basic Training of PavloHummel. His love for the theater continues to this day; he recently played the lead role on Broadway in China Doll in October 2015.

The talented actor made his film debut with a short performance in Me, Natalie. His theatrical appearances attracted the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola, who, despite protests and shock from the studio owners, chose Pacino to play Michael Corleone in the film that would become a blockbuster and icon of The Godfather. His performance earned him an Oscar nomination.

Al Pacino was to continue to be nominated for his performance in Serpico and the sequel to The Godfather. Over the years, his work in various films brought him further success and gained in popularity and fame. Born in New York, he eventually won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the blind US Army Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman. In 2001 he received the Cecil B. DeMille Prize for his life’s work in motion pictures.
